Vietnam generally has a tropical climate especially in the southern part but it is quite interesting to note that this country can also offer 'winter-feels' minus the snow. If you want to try out a much bearable cold weather, visit the northern provinces especially in December and January.

One of the provinces with the lowest recorded temperatures is Lao Cai where the famous SaPa town is located. The place is famous for both local tourists and foreigners all throughout the year. A famous landmark called Fansipan or better known as the Roof of Indochina is flocked by tourists due to its remarkable sea of clouds view.

Fansipan Peak

Transportation

From Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, you can reach Sapa town in 5-6 hours by bus, train, van for hire or private. One of the most common ways to get there is by bus which will cost you around VND 300 - 500 ($13-21) depending on the type of bus. Booking a bus ticket can be done online even on the day of your trip but the online booking could be more expensive than calling the bus company directly. If you're staying in a hotel, the staff could also do the booking for you and provide you with more details. This could be a good option to avoid miscommunication.

Train routes are also avaible from Hanoi to Lao Cai but this is not recommended since you have to take the bus or taxi to Sapa unlike the bus where you may get off few blocks from your hotel.

Some may also opt for vans for hire or private cars especially those coming from Noi Bai International Airport. This option can be costly but maybe convenient for you. If you check out Sapa's official website for tourists, you can find more information about airport to hotel transfers or as another option, hotels could also arrange the booking for you. Most hotels here are accommodating with requests like this.

Accommodation

Accommodation might be the last thing you'll ever worry about. The town is swarmed with both budget hostels and luxury hotels. Booking online through famous websites maybe a convenient choice but you just have to provide exact details like extra beds and check-in or check-out time because any immediate changes might actually cost you more.

Staying right at the center of the town allows more time to explore the city at night but if you want an exhilirating mountain view right from the windows of your hotel room then you might want to consider booking a hotel away from the town center. Although there are some hotels located at the towncenter advertising fascinating landscape views, the town has become more congested and commercialized with more building constructions in sight.

Places

Fansipan Mountain is always on the list of the must-visit places in Sapa. The magnificent sea of clouds is one of the most popular reasons tourist never miss climbing to the peak. More info here.

The Sun Plaza building is a prominent tourist spot that it has become an unwritten rule to take an obligatory photo in front of this establishment.

Sun Plaza | Sa Pa

Nui Ham Rong Sapa Mountain is another promising attraction where you could possibly see the most anticipated cherry blossoms. Get ready to be mesmerized by a miscellany of flora in its most natural terrain. The intricate rock formations with passages forming like small caves are just amazing. You're actually lucky if you get to this part though. The place is overwhelmingly huge that you might actually lose your way. Just make sure you get to the top because a breathtaking view overlooking the city is waiting for you.

Yay! We found the viewdeck at Nui Ham Rong Sapa Mountain

The hotpot restaurants there are also a must-try or if you want something familiar to your tastebuds, it wouldn’t be so hard to find the  nearest Italian or French-themed fastfood.

Souvineer shops should also be in your list. The items are incredibly cheap you'd wish to hoard. You can't probably buy the same items in any shops in Hanoi with the same price.

Weather

Always make a habit to check the weather conditions before visiting Sapa especially Fansipan. Rainy seasons could actually spoil the awesome view of the the sea of clouds at the Fansipan Peak and it gets really windy up there. The cold months on the other hand could be foggy but there's a 75% chance of a clear sky in November and December. While in the summer, Mr. Sun can get a little tough that it will be scorching hot and uncomfortable while climbing to the peak. The peak is an open area so be ready with your sun protection gears.

Price Tag

Accommodation - for as low as $13 per night, you can get a decent hotel room at the town center.

Transpo cost - From Hanoi to Sapa, and vice versa, expect to pay around  $12-15 for a bus ride.

Food - almost every corner of the town has a hotpot restaurant that serves seafood buffet at around $12. There are also fastfood shops that offer a seven-dollar pizza or drink that can surely satisfy a hungry tummy on a budget.

Attractions - Fansipan cable car ticket would cost a chunk of your budget while other attractions are free or with minimal entrance fee.

Pack your bags and get ready for Sapa. Here are some photos for inspiration.

Excuse the puffer jackets. These were taken on a 4°C clear sunny day in December so behold the sea of clouds!

The Golden Bridge is a newly opened attraction that had instantly drawn hundreds of tourists every day. It is situated inside Ba Na Hills, a huge amusement park in Da Nang, central part of Vietnam.

Golden Bridge | Ba Na Hills | Da Nang

It's actually quite far from the major cities of Vietnam. I know most tourists would visit Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City upon entering Vietnam. Even if Da Nang has its own international airport, its destinations/flights are limited. On this note, it's more convenient to travel from the major airports of Vietnam to Da Nang.

Travelling from Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi to Da Nang? Read more about it here.

You can quit thinking about long travel hours in sleeper buses or trains and just - read on.

How do you get to the Golden Bridge?

The Golden Bridge is right inside Sunworld Ba Na Hills. You have to take at least 2 cable car rides to get to this majestic view.

You have to buy a ticket for the cable car rides. The ticket cost for unlimited cable car ride is 700,000₫ (30USD). You don't need to buy tickets to get inside Ba Na Hills but you'd have to pay extra for museums and other rides.

Once you get the tickets, you'd have to take a little stroll and follow the signage leading to the cable car station. The escalators may seem endless so it feels exciting to finally get to the part when you have to take a 25-minute cable car ride over jawdropping landscapes and thickets.

The first stop will be the French Village. You can walk around the area since most of the attractions are just surrounding the French Village. You may also go directly to the cable car station called the Louvre Station to head to The Golden Bridge. It's a short ride this time. Walk through a lobby and you'll see right through the glass walls the huge hands that seem to cradle a golden bridge.

Travelling from Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi to Da Nang? Read more about it here.

Where is Ba Na Hills?

Ba Na Hills is a mountain resort which is an hour-drive from Da Nang City center. You can take a taxi or a private car. I tried using my Grab app but it took a long time for a driver to respond so I negotiated with a driver I met just after I disembarked at the bus station. I made quite a fair deal with a Grab driver for 600,000₫ good for 4 people from my hotel to Ba Na Hills. It was early in the morning so we've arrived in less than an hour.

Do I need a guide inside the resort?

Absolutely not! Just make sure you know where you could buy the tickets and you can stroll around all by yourself. Make sure you get yourself a map so you won't waste time getting lost or walking aimlessly. Although I've seen some guided group tours,  mostly comprises Koreans and Chinese, a lot of tourists just freely walk around enjoying the place at their own pace.

Are there food places?

The last thing you'd worry about is where to eat. Food stalls can be found everywhere that it's almost  impractical to get the lunch buffet ticket.

I was lured at getting the lunch buffet for only 200,000₫ (9 USD) along with my cable car ticket since I thought it was quite cheap. The buffet was literally huge. There were an overwhelming vareity of food to choose from that I eventually lost my appetite roaming around the buffet area. There were other Asian cuisines but  the menu was mostly Vietnamese food so if you're into the Vietnamese cuisine, this is the best option for you.

Honestly, I enjoyed food stall hopping around Ba Na Hills more than the lunch buffet. I found quite a variety of delectable food choices from snacksize nuggets to fresh fruit juices.

Is there a hotel in Ba Na Hills?

Yes. It's a four-star hotel that cost up to 200 USD/night for a double room. It's recommended if you choose to explore more of Ba Na Hills and avoid the crowd. Most tourists though only take a day tour and stay in the city center for more nighttime activities. There's a wide range of choices of hotels in Da Nang may it be a luxury hotel or backpackers' choice for as low as 7 USD.

When is the best time to visit?

Generally, the northern provinces of Vietnam experience four seasons. Be prepared with your sun screen and shades if you plan to visit from May to September. December is probably the coldest month so prepare your jumper or jacket. For the rest of the months, the weather may be rainy or warm. Rain gears will be a neccessity especially in September or October. The climate system has drastically changed over the years so better check the weather forecast. There might be rains in early January. The view at the Golden Bridge can be very foggy especially when it rains so some tourists complained about not having a clear view nor a good photo of it.

During the Vietnamese New Year Holiday (Tet Holiday/Chinese New Year), tourists would flock the resort. Going there early like around 7 AM would be a good idea to avoid the crowd.

How much will you spend?

Depending on your needs, you may spend 80 USD to 400 USD. Choosing a hotel at the city center is quite economical.

Here are the major expenses you might want to consider:

Hotel:  150,000₫ to 7Million₫  (7 USD - 300 USD)
Transportation (to and fro Da Nang - Ba Na Hills): 600,000₫/25USD (one car good for 4)
Ba Na Hills cable car ticket: 700,000₫/30USD
Lunch Buffet: 200,000₫/ 9USD
Snacks (sold at food stalls) - 30,000 to 70,000

What are the places to see in Ba Na Hills?

Ba Na Hills is a mountain resort with different fantastic themes or stations perfect for picture taking, sightseeing, and whatever that feeds your imagination.

Some of the impressive stations you shouldn't miss:

  • French Village - FREE - you'll get to this right after the first cable car ride. This is the biggest attraction. Inside this enormous themed parks, you can find a wax museum and a fantasy park with rides that are great for kids.
  • St. Denis Church - FREE - right inside the French Village

  • Wax Museum - 150.000₫ /person - get to meet some famous personalities up close + a jurassic doze of anthropology, paleontology and history
  • Fantasy Park - varied rides for kids (ticket costs vary)

  • The Golden Bridge - FREE - cross the bridge and get to a garden with more huge body sculptures.
  • Pagoda and the Gigantic Buddha - FREE - it's quite a long walk from the Golden Bridge but it's a great place to relax your feet while looking over a thick vegetation covering the mountain slopes.

  • Flower Garden - FREE - a jawdropping landscape of colorful flowers
  • Maze Garden - FREE - found in between the Golden Bridge and the Flower Garden. I was literally lost and I almost cried because it felt like the maze was unceasing. Luckily, I found the exit or entrance. lol!

Although you could get a brochure map once you get there, here's Ba Na Hills map for your reference.

Cebu has the perfect fusion of urban and rural setting. Among the other major cities of the country, Cebu City seems to be a better choice in terms of residence, career growth, and even retirement. Despite the industrialization development, Cebu City cradles great suburbs ideal for relaxation, adventure, or just any random recreational activities.

One of the frequently visited spots by local mountaineers is the Bocaue Peak located just within Cebu City. This destination is absolutely ideal for those working or residing in the city yet wanting to take a breathing space from the town's bustle.

Breakfast at the peak
The starting point of this adventure trip lies just around the corners of Cebu City so you won’t have to travel and get stuck on a vehicle for long hours. Aside from its accessibility, affordability is another consideration. You can make this adventure possible with at least Php 150 in your pocket for the motorcycle fares. With a minimal budget, some water and food to get by, and a whopping amount of stamina, you can surely go through this, no sweat, well, a little drip maybe. whew!

Guadalupe Church is the jump-off point where you need to take a motorcycle ride (locally known as habal-habal) to Barangay Napu and the trekking begins!

For a cragsman, this trek may only take 3-4 hours but for beginners, it may last for 6-7 hours and an impossible task for a couch potato (like the author of this blog. LOL)  It’s quite a difficult track but reaching the top is as rewarding as finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Even so, the hike is equally worthwhile with peaking because of the area's scenic beauty and soothing temperature. Aside from the countryside terrain, you will also pass by Mt. Babag with its famous landmark - the RCPI Towers.

The place is absolutely rich with natural resources. It has two main water sources where you could get a refill. Reaching the peak, you would find a vast area for camping, barbecue, games, team building, and just about anything you'd wish to do on a mountain top.  Just be ready with your coats since the temperature tends to drop at night til dawn.

So here's the vlog  © AldrinVids  that will probably feed your curiosity and let you feel how exhausting yet exciting the climb to Bocaue Peak is!

If you’re an adventure junkie this is something you shouldn’t miss!

Alegria, a town in the South of Cebu, is making a name in tourism due to the influx of tourists going for canyoneering or waterfall adventure. Kangcalanog Falls is located in the mountain areas of Alegria. Bloggers often spell it with a C as in Cancalanog.  It is not as developed as Kawasan Falls in Badian but it's perfect for adventure bluffs.

From Cebu City South Bus Terminal, take the bus with Bato-Oslob route and disembark at the heart of the town.  If you miss the town center, here's another landmark you would surely notice - the large signpost for Canyoneering and Kangcalanog Waterfalls along an intersection.

Kangcalanog Falls is located in Barangay Compostela. You have to take a motorcycle ride in order to get there. Motorcycle a.k.a. 'habal-habal'   (local name) drivers are just hanging by the corners to take you to your destination. It usually costs P50 for one-way ride. Since there are no guides and the way may be unfamiliar, you can also hire the drivers as guides.

*While I and two of my friends were taking photos in the town plaza, a driver approached us and tried making a deal to fetch us to and from Kangcalanog and Cambais Falls for P1,200. We tried to haggle, of course, and he agreed with P750. That's P250/person. We thought that was really cheap when we realized how far these areas were.

If you're driving, you just have to take note of the road signs. Upon reaching Sangi Road, go straight ahead until you reach the signpost, "You are leaving Barangay Guadalupe". The opposite road that has the sign, "Welcome to Barangay Guadalupe" will take you to Cambais Falls. Kangcalanog may be a bit difficult to find so asking the locals you pass by along the road would really help.

You have to register for P30 before you start the 800-meter walk with seriously steep and craggy terrain. Unlike the way to Cambais, this one's not so impressive but it's literally breathtaking. Literally.

*I was catching my breath especially on our way back. Should have exercised a lot before doing this! LOL

The area has a toilet inside a big cottage. There are food and drinks sold nearby but the options are quite limited.

The waters sunk amidst the canyons are as cerulean as the skies. Its depth is perfect for a plunge!

On our way to the main attraction, something caught our attention. These two fresh water springs are proofs of the abundance of the natural resources here. It's safe for drinking. Yes, we tried! It was thirst-quenching; far from the processed bottled water from the stores. We spotted a few locals trying to get a refreshing shower from these springs so we tried, too!

Continue chasing waterfalls in Alegria! Check out Cambais Falls

Thank you Alegria!

Alegria has at least four known waterfalls. Cambais Falls has been visited more often because of its abundant waters and picturesque view not to mention its icy fresh water that springs endlessly.

 Getting there...

From Cebu City South Bus Terminal, you can take a bus ride bound for Bato-Oslob and disembark at the town of Alegria where you can find their historic park or you can stop at Sangi Road where you can take a motorcycle ride. Either ways, motorcycles are anywhere in town. It seems to be one of the top jobs of the locals in Alegria.

the town's tourism tagline
one of Alegria's prominent structures
A bit of history. They call it the "Baluarte"

The conspicuous signage
Cambais Falls is located in  Barangay Guadalupe. It will cost you P100 - P150 (back & forth) for the motorcycle ride and drivers charge extra for their waiting time. Prices are negotiable though.

Since there are no tour guides in the area, you can hire the driver as the guide as well. They are pretty familiar of the track. The way is quite easy because you don't have to go through canyons or rappel steep boulders so all you need is just someone to show you the way.   #HUGOT . HAHA!

*When we were in town, a driver asked to bring us to both Cambais and Kangcalanog Falls (back & forth) and he also presented himself as our guide during the waterfall trek and all for P 1,200. We were 3 so... that means, we have to pay P400 each. We went around and inquired from other drivers and even vendors whom I believed were locals. The usual cost for a one-way ride to either Cambais or Kangcalanog is P50. The driver who first offered us P1,200, after minutes of haggling, agreed with P750 or P250/person. Not bad.

If you're driving, all you need to take note of are the road signs. Follow the road where you see the signpost for Canyoneering and Kangcalanog Waterfalls. Go straight ahead until you reach an intersection where you can see a conspicuous welcome sign that says, "Welcome to Brgy Guadalupe. This road will take you to Cambais.. The other road that has the post, "You are leaving Brgy Guadalupe" will take you to Kangcalanog. Both routes do not have much twists and turns. Just follow the paved road and to look out for the signage.

Cambais is quite easy to locate because of its noticeable signpost.

Cambais Falls is approximately 10k away from the main road. Upon reaching the entry points, you will be asked to register and pay a minimal entrance fee of P30.

Registration Area, a few meters away from the road
From the road, you need to walk 1.03 kilometers with easy track and breathtaking mountain and forest views before you get to bathe in the cool waters of Cambais.

Looks like a movie scene. Awesome!

As you trek, you'd pass by people washing their clothes or taking a bath in the lower levels of the waterfalls. People are lucky here; they got an abundant water supply!

There is one cottage for overnight stay situated a few meters away from the waterfall. Toilets might be available in the cottage but you can't find one near the pool. There are no food stalls or stores within the area so you have to get your food ready should you wish to stay a little longer.

During summer, the water in the pools seems to subside due to drought but this does not affect the clear and cool water of Cambais. Truly a beauty to behold.

We were freezing but we eventually got used to it. Felt it was actually therapeutic.

Trying to get to the diving spot. LOL.

Till our next laag!
